The Salem News: 'The Ordinance should stand.'

"Salem voters will also have a chance to weigh in on the city's so-called "Sanctuary for Peace" ordinance, which codifies city practices and police policies on immigration. The ordinance was actually approved by the City Council in March. Opponents, however, led a petition drive to get the measure on the ballot next week as Question 1. Such ballot measures do little to advance public dialogue. In actuality, they can bring an added level of divisiveness to city politics, and that has certainly been the case here. It's no way to run a city.

Councilors, the mayor and residents all had a chance to weigh in on the ordinance earlier this year, and the measure was approved on a 7-4 council vote in March. The ordinance should stand. That's how democracy is supposed to work."
